“He got ditched because he never grew up” – Colin Cowherd slams Baker Mayfield, claims immaturity has led to nomadic NFL career
Baker Mayfield was acquired by the Los Angeles Rams after he was released by the Carolina Panthers. Matthew Stafford is on IR, and the Rams need a quarterback for the remaining games.
Although the situation in L.A. isn't ideal for any quarterback, Mayfield has an opportunity to redeem himself under a great coach in Sean McVay. However, Colin Cowherd wasn't delighted with how things have played out with Mayfield and criticized him.
Here's what he said about Baker Mayfield's move to the LA Rams on the Colin Cowherd podcast:
"In the end, Baker didn't get ditched by Cleveland because he couldn't play. He got ditched by Cleveland because he never grew up. And now the second team, he sees him as just a backup. Just a serviceable guy."
Cowherd continued:
"They're not going to build around him. He won't get the support. And at this point, there was you know, a day we thought he could go to the 449ers but I never thought it was a great fit. They want an accurate distributor of the football. Brock Purdy was that for four years in college."
Cowherd added:
"I never thought Baker was a number-one talent. I thought it was a reach. I thought he was more of a late first early second-round talent maybe mid-second round. Be that as it may, what really did him in was immaturity."
Baker Mayfield was once the first overall pick, and many believed that he would be a great quarterback in the NFL. He did look promising in Cleveland, but the situation worsened after a reported rift with Odell Beckham Jr.
He was traded to the Carolina Panthers ahead of this season, but it wasn't a good situation for him. Mayfield also played poorly with the Panthers, which led to him falling down the depth chart.
Can Baker Mayfield revive his career with the Rams?
The Los Angeles Rams are still without Cooper Kupp (who is out injured) and that will make the task tougher for Mayfield. However, as an overall team, the Rams are far better than the Panthers.
Mayfield will be a free agent after this season, and he will hope to put in a run of good games for the Rams to raise his market value. He is expected to start on Thursday when the Rams are up against the Las Vegas Raiders.
So far this season, Mayfield has a passer rating of 74.4 with 1,313 yards, six touchdowns, and six interceptions in seven games.
While no one is expecting him to set the NFL on fire and compete with Matthew Stafford for the starting role, there is a chance for Mayfield to succeed in L.A. If he hits the ground running, he will give himself a chance at being a starting quarterback elsewhere next season. Given how the last two seasons have gone, this could be Baker Mayfield's last chance.
