Colts icon Dwight Freeney chooses his MVP quarterback (and it's not Patrick Mahomes)
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has won league MVP three times in his career and will look to add a fourth MVP trophy to his trophy collection. The Chiefs are off to a 6-0 start and are the only undefeated team in the league despite having multiple key guys injured along the way.
As the season approaches its midpoint, MVP conversations are starting to heat up with some candidates emerging. Patrick Mahomes, Jared Goff, Josh Allen, and Lamar Jackson are a handful of quarterbacks in the discussion.
Hall of Fame defensive end Dwight Freeney joined Kay Adams on the Up & Adams Show on Monday, and the two discussed who should be in the running for the MVP right now. Freeney, who has chased quarterbacks down for a living, knows a thing or two about a good quarterback. He thinks Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff is the best player for seven weeks.
"I think right now you would have to give it to Jared (Goff)," Freeney said. "I think he's just playing great. He's playing great football, nothing against Patrick. Patrick has had better years... But I just think that, Jared Goff, he's playing great ball."
"I think there's one game this year he had no incompletions, I don't think anybody's talking about him, but I just think from just a standpoint of just being effective, just doing your job, doing the way that you're supposed to, he's up there."
Who has the best odds of winning the 2024 NFL MVP?
According to the odds via DraftKings Sportsbook, Patrick Mahomes still has the highest odds of winning this year's league MVP with +350 odds. This is a bit of a head-scratcher as Mahomes has six touchdown passes and eight interceptions in five games, but the Chiefs are the only undefeated team in the NFL.
In second is Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen (+500). Allen has 12 total touchdowns to zero interceptions so far this season and over 1,483 yards on offense, as the Bills have a 5-2 record.
Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson has the third-highest odds (+500) as he and the Ravens hold a 4-2 record. Jackson has over 1,529 yards on offense and has thrown 10 touchdowns while rushing for two.
Jared Goff has the fourth-highest odds at +800. Goff and the 5-1 Detroit Lions hold the number one seed in the NFC after defeating the previously undefeated Minnesota Vikings. Goff has completed 73.6 percent of passes and has thrown for 1,610 yards, 10 touchdowns, and four picks in six games.
