Colts' Nick Cross opens up about changes in Anthony Richardson since QB's return
Indianapolis Colts' safety, Nick Cross shed light on the transformation his teammate, quarterback Anthony Richardson, when he appeared on the Up & Adams show, on Friday.
The comments come in the backdrop of Richardson's return as the Colt's starter in Week 11 after being benched in favor of Joe Flacco, midway through the season.
"Ever since he's come in there, you know, he's put his head down and worked, you know, especially over the last couple weeks, you know, just seeing a different level of consistency, of discipline, preparation, and just a fierce competitiveness," said Cross.
Anthony Richardson's season has been a rollercoaster. ESPN's Bill Barnwell noted a significant change in his offensive usage. Before being benched, Richardson averaged only three designed quarterback runs per game. Since returning in Week 11, that number has jumped to seven per game. Barnwell termed Richardson's impressive 0.24 expected points added per play, on these runs, as "excellent."
Anthony Richardson's road to redemption
NFL.com analyst Nick Shook offered a more critical perspective on Thursday. Anthony Richardson dropped eight spots in quarterback rankings and is now sitting at 29th overall.
Shook noted the QB's "scattershot" performance and inconsistent accuracy. Yet, he acknowledged Richardson's potential, pointing out that he had two three-touchdown games in recent matchups.
Colts GM Chris Ballard provided the most supportive voice. He candidly admitted to The Athletic on Friday that he regretted playing Richardson as a rookie.
"Looking back on it, I wish we hadn't played him as a rookie," Ballard said. He passionately defended Richardson against early criticism, stating, "Nobody believed it (Richardson being able to perform at a high level as a starter). To watch him these last three weeks, I couldn't be more proud."
Anthony Richardson ranks fourth among quarterbacks in rushing yards over the past three games. His mobility creates additional challenges for defenses and when paired with Jonathan Taylor, it stretches defensive formations horizontally.
With four games left in the season, Richardson's development remains a critical part of the Colts storyline. His ability to overcome early-season struggles and live up to his potential will be crucial for the team.
