Cowboys' Dak Prescott will be headed to free agency in 2025 with no deal in place by Week 1, claims NFL insider

Dak Prescott over the years has taken up the role of America’s quarterback wonderfully. However, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, those days might be numbered. Still waiting to sign an extension, Prescott could be heading towards free agency in 2025.

Selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL draft, Prescott became the starter in his rookie year due to injuries to other players. He did well in his next few years, resulting in the Cowboys handing him a massive $120 million deal in 2020. With that contract nearing its end and a new deal still unsigned, Rapoport highlighted the issues that have led to this impasse on "The Rich Eisen Show."

“I think if you're a team and you have a quarterback that's highly priced with a ton of leverage you'd like to pay not as much," Rapoport said. “And I think if you're Dak Prescott you'd like to get a lot. So, figuring out the combination between ‘not as much’ and ‘a lot’ has been hard.
“I think a deal is there to be done. I just don't know if it's actually going to be done before they start the season. Then you know once he starts the season, then it's sort of like, ‘Yeah, well that’. Probably if he doesn't have a deal by the season, I think he's probably a free agent next year.” (Time stamp: 01:45 - 2:13)

The Cowboys start their season on September 8 against the Cleveland Browns. Fans will be hoping that their team manages to sign Dak Prescott before Week 1.

Dak Prescott isn’t alone in the contract extension saga

Apart from Prescott, the Cowboys have several people within the organization who need new contracts. Star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb is also in the final year of his rookie deal, and unlike his QB, Lamb is holding out until he signs an extension.

Star LB Micah Parsons has also conveyed the eagerness to sign a new deal, though he has one more year on his contract. Coach Mike McCarthy, like his QB and WR, is also in the final year of his agreement with the Cowboys.
