Cowboys GM Jerry Jones makes opinion perfectly clear on Trey Lance replacing injured Dak Prescott
As Trey Lance may know, Dak Prescott's only other season that has gone this wrong was punctuated by a season-ending injury. While Prescott's season doesn't appear to be over, he has now experienced a lengthy injury-related absence in both troubling Dallas Cowboys regular seasons in his career.
With Prescott out of the picture for now, Jerry Jones was asked about his feelings on moving forward with Cooper Rush and Trey Lance. Jones addressed the possibility of using the former San Francisco 49ers first-round pick. Per The Athletic reporter Jon Machota, Jones refused to rule out the possibility of getting a look at Lance.
"Let's not dismiss the possibility of doing anything," Jones said. "The 'going with' has a past tense aspect to it that I wouldn't recognize. It's not impossible to incorporate some of the skills that we might get from both quarterbacks. ... There are things we can do with [Lance] that I think can add punch to the offense."
So, while not a ringing endorsement of an all-in move on the first-rounder turned project quarterback, one can reasonably expect to see Lance get some action during Prescott's absence.
Exploring potential expectations for Trey Lance
Had Dak Prescott's contract situation not been resolved at the 11th hour going into Week 1, any Trey Lance sighting would have been set in a remarkably different context. However, with Prescott now working under a four-year, $240 million deal per Spotrac, Lance's job will at best be to hold down the fort.
Of course, that is assuming he gets an opportunity at all. Cooper Rush has been the second-string quarterback this season, and by typical logic, he will get the vast majority of work throughout this stretch.
However, with Jones seemingly offering a chance for a Lance sighting, moving to the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback would offer the opportunity to sell more tickets at least. Of course, it would logically take a rough performance from Rush to hand the reins to the team's third-string quarterback.
That said, considering the quarterback's skillset with the ability to rush, perhaps getting him some looking in a modified wildcat offense makes the most sense. If nothing else, Lance affords the opportunity to work in a format similar to Taysom Hill with more of a lean towards throwing plays instead of running routes.
With Jonathan Mingo set to join the team, it is clear that either way, the offense will look a bit different going forward.
