Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy delivers update on Dak Prescott amid training camp
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott will be entering his ninth season with the Cowboys heading into the 2024-25 season. He's getting ready for another year under the Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, and on Friday, the coach delivered an update on Prescott while praising him.
Prescott is coming off of one of the best seasons of his NFL career as he set career-highs in touchdown passes (36), completions (410), completion percentage (69.5) and passer rating (105.9).
“He’s just gonna keep getting better and better (in this offense)," McCarthy said (via The Athletic's Jon Machota). … "Love him in the classroom. He’s a sponge. Can’t get enough."
"Frankly, if he does anything wrong, he probably does a little bit too much away from here, because he’s always working on his game. He’s a guy that’s always looking to improve, and you’re seeing it.”
In a contract year, it sounds like McCarthy has full faith in his quarterback and his ability to lead the team. McCarthy, like Dak Prescott, could be in his final season with the Cowboys, as McCarthy is a potential hot-seat candidate if the Cowboys underperform this season.
Could Dak Prescott be preparing for his last season as a member of the Dallas Cowboys?
Dak Prescott has been the Dallas Cowboys starting quarterback for the past nine seasons. The Cowboys signed him to a four-year $160 million contract extension before the start of the 2021 season.
Since then, Dallas has won just one playoff game. While Prescott always shows up in the regular season and performs well, the same can't be said about the playoffs. In nine seasons, Prescott has a post-season record of 2-5, with just one playoff win in the last three seasons.
Jared Goff, Trevor Lawrence, Jordan Love and Tua Tagovailoa each have gotten extensions and are listed in the top 10 highest-paid QBs.
While Prescott is in a contract year, he knows there's a chance this could be his last season as a member of the Dallas Cowboys. He addressed that with Fox 4's Jeff Kolb earlier this week.
"It's not something I look for, or prepare, even plan for, but if something like that happens, I'll certainly be ready for it," Prescott said.
Dak Prescott and the Cowboys will look to repeat as NFC East winners. If Prescott can help the team win the division and a few playoff games, there's a solid chance he will return to the big star as a top-five, top-three, highest-paid quarterback in the NFL.
