Cowboys insider bats for Trey Lance-level talent to be “loaned” to UFL
Trey Lance is likely to be third on the quarterback depth chart for the Dallas Cowboys this season. The former first-round draft pick of the San Francisco 49ers made his preseason debut for Dallas this past weekend against the Los Angeles Rams.
Since Lance is not expected to see much playing time in the upcoming season, some feel he should be 'loaned' to the United Football League (UFL) to gain experience. One of those who supports this idea is Dallas Cowboys reporter Clarence Hill Jr., who shared that sentiment in a reply on X (formerly Twitter).
"This. I have said this. Trey Lance could use reps in the UFL," Clarence posted on X
Hill believes that Trey Lance could use more reps and the opportunity to get playing time on the field. Allowing players like Lance to gain that exposure while still on their NFL rookie contracts could be similar to minor league baseball players before they make their big league debut.
Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy gives good review of Trey Lance's preseason debut
Despite Trey Lance not seeing any playing time since last preseason, Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy was pleased with what he saw from the quarterback. While speaking to reporters after the Cowboys' 13-12 loss to the Rams loss on Sunday, he said that he thought Lance was well prepared for the opportunity.
Although McCarthy made note of some aspects that Lance could improve on, he was overall happy with the performance of his third-string quarterback.
"He was clearly prepared, I think the way he saw the game, the communication, way he ran the huddle, pre-snap penalties I think we had one. So that part was really good. He just needs a play. There's some things footwork-wise he'll be better. It's the first time not only for him this year .''-Mike McCarthy on Lance's performance
Lance likely won't jump Cooper Rush on the depth chart for the QB2 spot. Getting him reps and experience with the offense in the preseason is crucial in case he is needed to step up in the regular season.
