Cowboys QB Dak Prescott should want out of Dallas amid contract standoff, says Packers Super Bowl champ

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is one of a slew of high-profile players who will become a free agent after the 2024 season. For months, speculation has abounded about whether he will get a contract extension before that happens.

But at least one person thinks the three-time Pro Bowler should leave: former Green Bay Packers Super Bowl-winning receiver James Jones. He explained why Wednesday on Fox Sports 1's SPEAK:

"...You guys [Cowboys] didn't really show me that y'all really want me like that. First, you paid a running back before me. Then now I'm coming off an All-Pro year and you guys are saying, 'Let's wait this thing out.' So that's letting me know that y'all are really unsure about me.
"So for me you know what, y'all go ahead and see if the grass is greener on the other side. Draft a quarterback, see if Trey Lance is the answer."

Former Packers executive speaks up on Dak Prescott-Cowboys contract standoff

But as it turns out, James Jones is not the only ex-Packer to think the Dallas Cowboys will have major Dak Prescott-related trouble.

Former franchise vice president Andrew Brandt recently shared his own thoughts on the contract on the "Hot Mic" podcast. According to him, the franchise was not in a no-win situation, with CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons also due for an extension but them having only so much money to allocate without going over the cap.

"They cannot do anything. Play it out, maybe franchise next year or pay him through the roof. Let him go, where he’ll make the biggest contract ever in free agency, or try to do something now... the only way they’re getting cap room is through Dak Prescott."

He even went as far as to call their 2024 season a "lame-duck" scenario:

"Everyone thought Mike McCarthy would be gone (after the 32-48 Wild Card loss to the Packers). He’s not gone. He’s riding it out. (Micah) Parsons has a year left. (CeeDee) Lamb’s got a year left. Prescott’s got a year left. They let [Tony] Pollard go. They signed Zeke Elliott, who’s a one-year project."

As for the options above, Cowboys fan TJ Jefferson believes Prescott should just play it out, then seek a new home in free agency. He told Rich Eisen on Wednesday:

"This guy deserves so much better... It's not his fault that he has only two (playoff) wins under his belt."

Cowboys practice resumes on July 25.
