Cowboys QB Trey Lance makes his feelings clear as Dak Prescott set to miss multiple weeks
Trey Lance has barely seen the field since he was traded to the Dallas Cowboys during the 2023 preseason. Nevertheless, he is very confident that he will get the chance.
Speaking during Wednesday's practice ahead of the intradivisional game against the Philadelphia Eagles this coming Sunday, the team's first without injured starting quarterback Dak Prescott, the third overall pick of the 2021 Draft said:
“I’d love the opportunity to get on the field any way I can, if that’s what Coach thinks is best. … I feel like I’m in a real good spot right now.”
He also expressed his confidence in guiding the offense should the scenario above happen, given his extensive time spent watching and learning from the sidelines:
"I feel like I'm in a really good spot right now. Having gone through the whole offseason program, training camp, and everything, having a full year and some under my belt now, I've learned how to see the game in different ways. I've kind of taken everything I possibly can from the two teams I've played for, and I'm trying to learn as much as I can from it."
Starting in Prescott's place will be Cooper Rush, who has been a Cowboy for seven seasons and counting (not including a brief 2020 preseason stint with the New York Giants). Trey Lance gave a strong endorsement of him:
"You saw it on Sunday, he made a ton of plays. I think we just didn’t make as many plays as we needed to win the game, but he came in and gave us every opportunity to win."
Trey Lance has appeared in eight NFL regular season games, throwing for 797 yards on 55% completion, with five touchdowns and three interceptions.
Trey Lance discusses relationship with Dak Prescott, Cooper Rush
Quarterback competitions, especially between a pair of top stars or one top star and a highly regarded young prospect, can become very heated and sometimes toxic (like Joe Montana vs. Steve Young).
For a hungry, young player like Trey Lance, who dominated in college, being made to sit on the bench as a third-stringer should normally be hard to take.
But he is not that man, instead having chosen to form bonds with the two men above him. In that same media availability, he said of his relationship with Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush:
"I think we're a lot closer, me and Coop, and Dak as well. You spend that much time with someone, and I kind of didn’t know what to expect coming into it, but they’ve both been great to me. Couldn't ask for anything more, so I'm very thankful for that."
The Cowboys-Eagles game kicks off at 4:25 PM ET on CBS.
