Cowboys reporter floats West Wing-like conspiracy theory on Jerry Jones' interest in Deion Sanders

Jerry Jones could be playing chess in this Dallas Cowboys head coaching search. There has to be a reason for the peculiar head coaching candidate choices, such as Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders, their offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, and Seattle Seahawks assistant head coach Leslie Frazier. Local Dallas sports radio reporter Bob Sturm might be on to something.

"If this was the West Wing, the episode would show us that Deion Sanders was the choice all along, but acceptance was low. So, then the strategy team decided to parade objectively worse options to swing the public to embrace Deion within just a few weeks," Sturm tweeted on Tuesday, January 21.

The West Wing is a popular political TV Show that ran from 1999 to 2006 and is considered one of the best TV Series of all time. It shows the inner dealings of the staff under the American President. Sturm is alluding to the choice of interview candidates as a political style maneuver to potentially present Deion Sanders as the best option for head coach.

Deion Sanders was the first to speak to Jerry Jones

Jerry Jones reached out to current Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders very quickly after the Cowboys head coaching job came open.

Sanders then called the call with Jones 'very intriguing'.

“To hear from Jerry Jones is truly delightful, and it’s intriguing. I love Jerry and believe in Jerry. After you hang up, and process it, and think about it, it’s intriguing."

Unlike other head coaching candidates, he is not expected to formally interview for the role. However, the official Cowboys website has Sanders listed as a candidate.

It shows the special relationship that Jerry Jones has with Deion Sanders that he does not have with other head coaching candidates. Perhaps the bond is strong enough for Jones to pull a West Wing-type move for Sanders.

Dallas Cowboys are currently interviewing head coaching candidates

In addition to Sanders, there are four other names listed on the Cowboys website. They are former Jets Head Coach Robert Saleh, current Eagles Offensive Coordinator Kellen Moore, Seattle Seahawks Assistant Head Coach Leslie Frazier, and the latest addition, the Cowboys' own Offensive Coordinator, Brian Schottenheimer.

It is rumored that former Cowboys tight end Jason Witten is in the mix as well.

However, the list of names has not brought much excitement. NFL sports writer Jared Dubin added that four of the six candidates are not even being considered for the other vacant head coaching jobs.

In addition to the Cowboys, Moore has interviewed with the New Orleans Saints and Jacksonville Jaguars while Saleh has interviewed with the Las Vegas Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars.

This lends further credence to the conspiracy theory that Jerry Jones has already decided on Deion Sanders and is conducting interviews with lesser candidates to grease the acceptance of Sanders when he is introduced.
