Cowboys stare at bad news on Trey Lance as Dak Prescott contract situation drags on

The Dallas Cowboys were one of the few teams to do precious little business (and even less on the contract extensions front) this summer despite a laundry list of big names being available in free agency. The Cowboys are now likely to enter preseason without contract extensions in place for Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, or even Micah Parsons.

As such, it appears the Cowboys have been giving Trey Lance some reps in training camp. Dallas brought the 2021 third overall pick to town just days before the regular season kicked off last year in exchange for a 2024 fourth-round pick.

But if the Cowboys are grooming Lance to take over from Prescott under any premise this year, that plan is not quite paying dividends so far. A few pieces of footage of Lance from training camp went viral over the weekend showcasing the former 49ers QB struggling to find his WRs.

It appears training camp has been a mixed bag for Trey Lance but it's highly unlikely he starts the season as QB2 on the Cowboys depth chart. The Athletic's Cowboys reporter Jon Machota had this to say about Lance in training camp so far:

"The pads haven’t even come on, so it’s difficult to be too critical. But if the Cowboys were opening the season tomorrow, Lance would be third on the depth chart behind Prescott and Rush."

The report added that Lance wasn't pushing the ball down the field all that much which could point to a lack of confidence.

Cowboys back themselves into a corner with delay in Dak Prescott's contract extension

Both Tua Tagovailoa and Jordan Love signed massive contract extensions over the weekend with the Packers opting to make Love the NFL's joint-highest-paid quarterback in 2024. With a $220 million deal, Love's contract's average annual value registers at $55 million a year, the same as Joe Burrow and Trevor Lawrence.

It now remains to be seen if the Cowboys bite the bullet and hand Dak Prescott a deal that surpasses Jordan Love's contract. Many analysts have opined that Dallas will have to make Prescott the league's first $60 million-a-year signal caller. Going by the booming QB market, that may very well have to come true.

Speaking on Love's historic $220M deal, Jerry Jones had this to say to reporters:

"I get in trouble everytime I make comparisons. Of course we saw a head-to-head match with Green Bay last year. I might, just for that, get a chance to show he's the best with the Cowboys star on him."
