Daniel Jones’ future in jeopardy as Giants approach NFL trade deadline: report
The New York Giants are struggling this season with a 2-6 record, and there are several factors contributing to their poor performance. Among these, the quarterback position stands out as the primary issue the team is looking to address.
Since Daniel Jones joined the Giants in 2019, both his performance and the team’s record have been disappointing. The Giants are 31-58-1 with Jones, marking the second-worst record in the NFL during that time, only behind the New York Jets at 29-62. Since winning Super Bowl XLVI, the Giants have made the playoffs only twice, though Jones isn’t solely to blame for this decline.
Injury-prone Daniel Jones is the best option for NY Giants
Jones’ performance has been affected by recurring injuries over the past two years, including a grade 1 ankle sprain, neck injury and a grade 3 ACL tear. These injuries were discussed in HBO’s "Hard Knocks" offseason edition by general manager Joe Schoen, who noted:
"The reality is, three serious injuries in two years, we need to protect ourselves. He [Jones] didn’t have much of a chance this year,” suggesting they are considering moving on from Jones.
The Giants appear prepared to part ways with Jones and are making efforts to assess all options before making a decision. He was benched in Week 7 against the Bengals, which the Giants lost 7-17. Jones returned for the following game against the Steelers, which they also lost 26-18.
When asked about the decision to start Jones, coach Brian Daboll stated:
“I think he gives us the best chance, number one.”
Daboll explained that the blame doesn’t rest solely on Jones, saying:
“There were a lot of plays that he did exactly what he needed to do… It wasn’t just one person, a protection, or a route.”
A look at Daniel Jones' stats for the NY Giants
Jones’ season stats show a completion rate of 62.6%, with 174 completions out of 278 attempts. He has only scored six touchdowns with five interceptions. His overall record with the Giants is 24-41-1 across 66 starts, and his career TD-INT ratio is 68-44.
These stats aren’t what the Giants expected from a former No. 6 overall draft pick, especially given that he has been sacked over 200 times across six seasons. However, if released while uninjured, Jones would receive a $22.2 million payout, providing him a silver lining in a challenging season.
