Davante Adams trade rumors: Boomer Esiason sets timeline for WR's potential move to Jets
The Las Vegas Raiders acquired Davante Adams from the Green Bay Packers in 2022 via a blockbuster trade and later signed him to a five-year, $140 million contract extension. However, ever since his first year in Las Vegas, there have been rumors about a potential exit for the receiver.
The situation worsened after the Raiders released Derek Carr, Adams' former college teammate and close friend. Moreover, after the New York Jets traded for Aaron Rodgers, all signs pointed to the AFC East franchise making a move for Adams.
Unfortunately, Rodgers suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in Week 1 last year, and a move to trade for Adams didn't make sense for the Jets. However, throughout this offseason, there has been a strong belief that the 31-year-old wideout will soon leave the Raiders for the Jets.
Former Jets quarterback Boomer Esiason recently talked about Adams' future, and he believes that a Rodgers-Adams reunion in New York is certain. As per Audacy, the four-time Pro Bowler said:
“The dead cap for the Raiders this year is $40 million [if they traded him]. I’m hearing that this is gonna happen - if it does happen - in late August or early September,” Boomer said. “And the cap hit for him is $25 million."
Esiason referred to Netflix's 'Receiver' show in which Davante Adams was often seen frustrated with how the Raiders' offense operated throughout last season. He said:
“I’m not sure about why it would take that long, but Davante is never going to come out publicly and say ‘I want to leave the Raiders.’ But you hear in this ‘Receiver’ program, where he says ‘I gotta get out of here before I get killed.’"
Although Boomer Esiason is confident that the Jets will be able to land Davante Adams, he thinks that the addition of the star wide receiver might cause problems for other players on the roster. He added:
“I’ll tell you what... If they ended up getting Davante Adams, I don’t know how you keep everyone happy.”
The Jets currently have Garrett Wilson, Mike Williams, Allen Lazard, and Malachi Corley as their four primary receivers. It will be interesting to see if the franchise will make more moves to offload some players if they do end up getting Adams.
Davante Adams' addition will make Aaron Rodgers' Jets a favorite to win the AFC East
Despite Stefon Diggs' exit, the Buffalo Bills are still the favorites to win the AFC East. However, if the Jets acquire Davante Adams from the Raiders, then Aaron Rodgers and Co. will be firmly seen as the favorites to win the division and make a deep playoff run.
The Jets have one of the best defenses in the league, and even though they improved their offense in the offseason, the wide receiver position still needs some improvement. Mike Williams can do wonders for Rodgers, but his injury history makes him an unlikely option.
Since Rodgers doesn't have many years left in the league, it will be ideal for the Jets to go all in this season and acquire the required pieces to make a push for the Super Bowl.
