David Samson speculates how much power Tom Brady could wield with Jimmy Garoppolo's Raiders - "Whole thing's absurd"
Jimmy Garoppolo and Tom Brady shared a team with Josh McDaniels in 2016. Since then, both quarterbacks eventually made their way to opposite ends of the country. At one point, even Josh McDaniels flirted with the Indianapolis Colts to the north. However, in 2023, all three pieces have consolidated in the city of Sin.
Speaking on the Nothing Personal podcast, NFL analyst David Samson scoffed at what he interpreted as a move to preserve the legitimacy of the NFL's football product:
"This made me smile. The NFL... made very clear that he will not be an owner who has any operating capacity. 'He will not be a decision maker. He will not be in the room where it happens. He's just buying into... the Las Vegas Raiders. It's like asking whether LeBron James knows the signs for the Boston Red Sox. Of course [he doesn't].'"
He continued, explaining that the former quarterback wants to have power in the organization but not play for it:
"I'm not buying [the NFL's position]. Tom Brady invested in the Raiders to be part of it. Not to get a free suite, not to make appearances. He did that deal with FOX to be an ambassador... I guess now he has the excuse. [He] gets to go eight weekends a year. It's absurd to me. This whole thing's absurd... He will never play for the Las Vegas Raiders. He will not."
Tom Brady reaches career record for longest retirement
While Brady is settling into retirement life by rejoining the NFL in a new capacity, the former quarterback has stayed true to his word that he's done on the gridiron. That said, the move to join the Raiders has led to speculation about him getting restless in retirement.
Still, with every day that passes, he set a new personal best for the longest retirement after last year's attempt went up in smoke after six weeks.
With a year and a half until his new position at FOX begins, one can only speculate on how much work he'll wind up taking on before the 2024 deal begins. Simply put, even after joining the franchise, he will have plenty of free time.
That said, the ownership endeavor may keep him "chewing" for a while, but it might not satisfy his craving to get stuff done. The former quarterback may be an ancient athlete, but he's a newborn retiree. One can only wait to see what his post-football life will ultimately morph into.
