Deion Sanders as Cowboys HC in 2025? Coach Prime addresses speculation of transition to NFL
Deion Sanders has been the most heavily discussed college coach since he took the reins of the Colorado Buffaloes in 2023. Now, he may be taking his talents to his old home in Arlington, Texas.
Lately, speculation has been abounding as to whether the Hall of Fame cornerback will join the NFL next year by assuming the coaching job at the Dallas Cowboys, with whom he won a Super Bowl in the 1995 season.
On FS1's "Speak" on Tuesday, he addressed those rumors by seemingly rejecting them:
"I love it where I am!"
When Coach Prime joined the Colorado Buffaloes in 2023, many immediately dismissed him as a publlicity stunt hiring. Those notions were seemingly validated when the team went 4-8.
But Sanders and the Buffaloes have been on a roll this season. They currently sit at 7-2, only behind BYU among Big 12 teams. In doing so, Deion has bolstered his case as a Coach of the Year candidate.
Former Jets head coach urges Cowboys to hire Deion Sanders
Another prominent proponent of the Deion Sanders-Cowboys reconnection is veteran former coach Rex Ryan. On Monday’s episode of Get Up, he said that having a former player who knows the culture very well would only mean good things - as evidence by the Detroit Lions and Houston Texans’ respective hirings of former players Dan Campbell and DeMeco Ryans:
"They need something, somebody that has the pride in that organization. Being a Dallas Cowboy, the pride you take in it, and by the way, Deion everywhere he’s been has been kicking you know what."
He then pointed towards the program-building credibility at Jacksonville State, then at the aforementioned Colorado.
Ryan concluded by drawing on his personal experiences with his former player:
"How are you going to get this kid back on board? He’s going to have to respect the guy that comes into that building. You not going to respect Deion Sanders? He was twice the player you were - and I coached Deion Sanders. He was a great teammate."
Another major proponent of hiring Sanders is long-time Cowboys hater Stephen A Smith, who has even suggested that they tank for his son Shedeur - despite Dak Prescott’s record-breaking four-year, $240-million contract.
