Deion Sanders receives former Cowboys WR's endorsement for HC following Mike McCarthy's exit

The Dallas Cowboys are in the headlines again, this time for multiple reasons. For some reason, the franchise decided to part ways with coach, Mike McCarthy, exactly a week after Black Monday. Dallas had an exclusive negotiation window with McCarthy until Jan. 14, but GM Jerry Jones reportedly didn't put an offer on the table to extend his contract.

With that, the Cowboys became the sixth NFL team that has a vacancy at coach, joining the Chicago Bears, New Orleans Saints, New York Jets, Jacksonville Jaguars and the Las Vegas Raiders. The New England Patriots were also on the list until they moved quickly to put Mike Vrabel in charge over the weekend.

It appears that Jerry Jones wasted no time in reaching out to one candidate, a man who has been linked with the Cowboys all season - Deion Sanders. Jones reportedly tested the waters with his former cornerback, following which Sanders told ESPN:

“To hear from Jerry Jones is truly delightful, and it’s intriguing. I love Jerry and believe in Jerry. After you hang up, and process it, and think about it, it’s intriguing. But I love Boulder and everything there is about our team, the coaches, our student body and the community.”

Former Cowboys All-Pro wide receiver Dez Bryant took notice of Jones' move. Bryant promptly tweeted out an endorsement:

"I hope Deion Sanders gets the Cowboys coaching job!"

Could Deion Sanders end up coaching the Dallas Cowboys in 2025?

Stranger things have happened in the league, and we know better than to rule this move out completely.

What could complicate matters is that Deion Sanders has been very vocal about wanting to coach both of his kids in the NFL. While Shedeur Sanders is widely expected to be a top-3 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, his brother Shilo Sanders' NFL future is a bit more murky. Shilo isn't expected to be off the board in the first three rounds, but if that could serve as an incentive, the Cowboys could be open to drafting the Colorado safety.

Like Bill Belichick, Sanders reportedly has a buyout clause in his contract that would allow the Cowboys to prise him away from Boulder. Unlike Belichick's $10 million clause, Sanders' out clause stands at a reported $8 million.
