Derek Carr contract: Details of Saints' initial offer for former Raiders QB
Derek Carr is headed to the NFC South. After being released by the Las Vegas Raiders on Feb. 14, the former Raider intends on signing with the New Orleans Saints in free agency.
Multiple news outlets put out the news Monday morning that he'll join the Saints as their new franchise quarterback. As the news is still fresh and early, the contract numbers haven't been reported yet. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that it will be a four-year deal. Carr will be the team's quarterback throughout the 2027 season.
Not a long after the above tweet was post by Ian Rapoport, he tweeted the following:
The #Saints & Derek Carr agreed on a 4-yr deal for $150M with $100M in total guarantees, per me & @MikeGarafolo
He gets $70M effectively fully guaranteed ($60M at signing, another $10M in Year 3 vesting after Year 1). Carr structures his deal to accommodate Saints’ cap issues.
Prior to agreeing to be the Saints' next quarterback, Carr was leaning his decision toward the New York Jets.
Per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Jets were the frontrunners to land Carr with the Panthers and Saints in the backseat.
Fowler said:
"While the #Panthers and #Saints remain in the conversation for Derek Carr, the former Pro Bowl quarterback has a slight lean toward the #Jets as his next home as of now, per source. Nothing is final, but Jets -- who are linked to Aaron Rodgers -- have made an impression."
The New York Jets chose to hold off on signing Derek Carr with hopes they will acquire Aaron Rodgers
Derek Carr could have easily been the New York Jets QB heading into the 2023 season. He didn't feel like waiting on their decision to wait for Aaron Rodgers.
The Jets decided to wait on signing Carr with the hopes of acquiring Rodgers.
Rodgers is yet to make a decision on whether he wants to be traded, remain with the Packers or retire. The Jets are banking on him forcing a trade and believe they are the frontrunners to land him.
While the Jets hope Rodgers will be their next quarterback, Carr won't be. He'll be joining the NFC South and is back partnering with his former head coach, Dennis Allen, who drafted him in 2014.
Carr will be entering his 10th season at the age of 31 and has earned four Pro Bowl honors and two playoff appearances.
