Derek Carr's comments on Michael Thomas provides insight into Saints star's future

Derek Carr is excited to join the New Orleans Saints, but there was one important question regarding the team's future: What are they going to do with Michael Thomas? Thomas has a pretty significant contract and has rarely been seen active on the field in the last few seasons.

He's had poor injury luck, but when healthy, he is a record-setting wide receiver. Still, NFL teams can't pay for a player to never play, so the Saints have a decision to make.

Carr's comments about Thomas, who he spoke to on the phone, might illustrate the franchise's thinking towards the star wide receiver.

Saints QB Derek Carr ready to build on-field relationship with WR Michael Thomas: "He's so competitive and I think the energy that he brings, it's a very exciting time to throw him the football"

Carr said via NFL.com:

"The first time I talked to him on the phone I don't think he wanted me to get off the phone. I really enjoyed talking to him. I told Mickey (Loomis), you talk to Mike Thomas you feel like you two can go face the world. I told my wife when I got off the phone and just asked 'why are you smiling?' and I was like, I love this guy; he's so competitive and I think the energy that he brings, it's a very exciting time to throw him the football."

He continued:

"So, when he started recruitment talking to me and all that he wasn't even trying to recruit me he was like, 'When are we getting to work? We are wasting time.' And I was like, 'I feel the same way but we'll get there.' And I think our relationship has grown through this process and I look forward to making it stronger."

Carr is very excited to play with Thomas, and if there's one thing an NFL GM will listen to, it's what their newly signed star quarterback wants. If Carr wants to play with Thomas, then the likelihood of a trade or release is far less likely.

Does Derek Carr make the New Orleans Saints a contender?

The NFC South is full of bad teams without a quarterback. The Saints were a bad team (though arguably the most complete roster in the division) and now they have their quarterback in Derek Carr.

The former Las Vegas Raiders star likely makes them the best team in the division, which makes them a playoff team by default. Whether or not they'll be any good remains to be seen, though.
