"Late to meetings, screwing around in meetings" - Details about Zach Wilson's unprofessional behavior emerge
New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh made the surprising decision to bench starting quarterback Zach Wilson midway through the 2022 NFL season. Wilson was drafted by the Jets with the second overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and was seen as the future of the franchise.
Questions surrounded the reason as to why the Jets decided to bench the quarterback during a season in which they showed improvement. At the time, Saleh essentially said that there were off-the-field reasons as to why he wanted Wilson to take some time and evaluate himself.
Now, new details are emerging as to what Zach Wilson was doing, or not doing, that cost him the starting job. While making an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show on Friday, NFL insider Jordan Schultz said that the former BYU quarterback was late to meetings and didn't pay attention. Also, according to Schultz, Wilson didn't know what he needed to do while attending those meetings.
“Late to meetings, screwing around at meetings, and not having the right attitude”
The New York Jets quarterback clearly didn't take his job seriously, which became a problem for his teammates.
His teammates were said to be overjoyed when he was benched in favor of Mike White. When White suffered a serious rib injury, he was reactivated and started once again. This did not go over well with his teammates.
Schultz believes that if he is named the starting quarterback again next season, things could get ugly in the Jets locker room.
"There will be a mutiny if Zach Wilson was QB1 again. It's not going to happen."
Jets' Zach Wilson open to QB competition
After the New York Jets were eliminated from playoff contention and their season ended, Zach Wilson was asked about his thoughts on the team bringing in a veteran quarterback next season.
He said that he welcomes the competition and that he will use it as a way to show his coaches that he deserves to be the starting quarterback.
“I’m going to go out there and do my best to show the coaches that I deserve to be there. It’s not in a negative way, it’s a positive way. It’s making everybody else better.”
However, competing for the starting job may not be up to him. The New York Jets are said to be interested in trading the quarterback. Especially since the departure of offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur, starting fresh with the offense may be the next step for the team.
Also, with the lack of support he has received from his teammates and their desire to start a new quarterback, that may be all the Jets coaching staff needs to make a decision.
