Detroit Lions vs Minnesota Vikings box score, summary and match player stats feat. Aaron Jones and Jahmyr Gibbs
Two of the hottest teams in the NFL locked horns at the U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. With both defenses tapped as among the best in the league, we were always likely to see both units play a part early on, and that's exactly what happened.
Aaron Jones put the Vikings on the board early on after both defenses clamped down on the quarterbacks. Minnesota then raced to a 10-0 lead on the back of a very suffocating defense masterminded by Brian Flores. The score to take them to 10-0 was the 3rd-longest field goal in Vikings history.
The Lions’ first first down of the afternoon came with seconds left in the first quarter, which speaks volumes about how the Vikings made it really difficult for Jared Goff to get the offense going early on. A few exchanges later, the Lions were finally on the board owing to the longest run of Jahmyr Gibbs' two-year NFL career spanning 45 yards, which was also the longest run the Vikings defense has allowed this year.
Gibbs made sure to give his girlfriend that TD ball right after.
After trailing by 10 at one point, Goff gave the Lions the lead with a spectacular 34-yard throw to Amon-Ra St. Brown. Gibbs added to that lead with his second touchdown of the night, overturning Detroit's largest deficit of the season. Detroit entered half-time with a 21-10 lead over Minnesota.
The second half was a nail-biter that went right down to the end, like the Texans-Packer showdown at Lambeau Field. And just like that game, the Lions ended up winning this one off a field goal conversion, wrecking the Vikings' spotless 5-0 start to the season.
With that win, the Lions improve to 5-1 on the season while the Vikings will have to settle for a 5-1 start as well.
All in all, though, the Vikings defense, Jahmyr Gibbs and Jared Goff were the stars of the show. Over his last three games, Goff has 0 INTs and has racked up upwards of 280 yards for the third game running. The Lions now have control of the NFC North with their 5-1 record.
