Devin McCourty presses Lamar Jackson to resist Ravens’ attempts to pressure him into signing cheaper contract
Quarterback Lamar Jackson received the non-exclusive franchise tag from the Baltimore Ravens this off-season.
Baltimore placed the tag on Jackson right before the deadline closed last week. Jackson is under contract for the season and will be paid $32.4 million.
While he could speak with other teams about a contract, the Ravens would have the opportunity to match it, or exchange him for two first-round picks.
Former New England Patriots defensive back Jason McCourty recently weighed in on the issue, urging Jackson to hold out for what he's worth.
McCourty said via The Herd with Colin Cowherd:
"So I think for him, he needs to continue to do what's best for him. Not going out there and taking that kind of emotion that we heard at the end of the year. Do it for the guys. No, do what's best for you in business, because that's what every team will always do. I think as a player, he has to do the same thing."
Lamar Jackson claims he turned down a 3-year $133 million fully guaranteed contract
Jackson and the Ravens have been trying to agree to a long-term contract since the last off-season. ESPN reporter Adam Schefter reported that Jackson turned down a $200 million guaranteed deal back in September.
However, Jackson denied the report and tweeted how much he was really offered.
"133/3 years fully guaranteed, but I need a agent?"
He's likely seeking a fully-guaranteed contract after the Cleveland Browns signed Deshaun Watson to a five-year, $230 million fully guaranteed contract last off-season.
The deal the Ravens offered would have paid him $44.33 million per season. As of right now, he would have had the sixth-highest average per year for a quarterback and the second-most guaranteed money of all quarterbacks.
Jackson will be entering his sixth season in the NFL this year and it's unknown whether or not he will sit out while on the tag.
