Did Cam Newton work out with Dolphins after Tua Tagovailoa's injury? Debunking viral rumor

Cam Newton to the Miami Dolphins started making sense for the NFL fans after Tua Tagovailoa suffered another concussion injury. However, the reports of Newton working out with the Dolphins are not true.

The former Carolina Panthers quarterback has not stepped on the gridiron since the 2021 season. However, one post on X started making the rounds, stating that the Dolphins are considering adding Newton to the roster. The viral post purportedly came from a senior NFL writer on ESPN’s X account.

“Breaking: Former Panthers QB now free agent Cam Newton worked out with the Miami Dolphins this afternoon. Could be a sign that the Dolphins are looking for a replacement after QB Tua Tagovailoa left last night’s game with a potential season-ending concussion #Dolphins.”

However, this tweet is not from Adam Schefter, but from a fake account trying to impersonate the journalist. There are multiple ways that this can be identified, including the mistake in name spelling and the missing blue check mark.

However, at a momentary glance, this post could and did fool many NFL fans due to the multiple similarities in the account. So, the report from this fake account is, as expected, fake. Cam Newton has not tried out for the Dolphins, nor is Tua Tagovailoa out for the season, as of now.

Tagovailoa has been injured with a concussion to his head twice in his career previously. Skylar Thompson is the only man on the roster, apart from Tagovailoa, for the QB spot. Hence, the fake report found credibility based on the roster status of the Miami franchise.

Did Cam Newton retire from the NFL?

The virtuoso QB’s last game was with the Panthers in his second stint during the 2021 regular season. Even though Cam Newton hasn’t formally retired from the NFL, the 35-year-old has no plans of doing that as well. Newton highlighted his mindset in June of this year on his 4th and 1 podcast.

“I haven't played football in four years," Newton said. "Do I think somebody is going to take a chance on me now? No. That's me being honest. Cam, are you planning on retiring? No.”

The 2015 NFL MVP has shifted all his attention to content creation. Newton remains active on his Twitch channel, streaming and playing video games for fans. He also does a weekly podcast on YouTube and has made several appearances on other NFL podcasts.
