Did the NFL just bury Zach Wilson? Gardner Minshew, Brian Hoyer trump Jets QB in fresh list
Former second-overall pick and New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson had a terrible season and was benched by the franchise. He was later replaced by Mike White but got another opportunity which he failed to take advantage of.
As per recent rankings by NFL.com, Wilson is ranked as the 59th best quarterback for the 2022-2023 season. He was behind the likes of Gardner Minshew, Brian Hoyer, Skylar Thompson, Brett Rypien, Malik Willis, and many other backup quarterbacks.
This is a new low for the Jets quarterback, who has hit rock bottom. Wilson is being written off right in front of our eyes, and few believe he will recover.
This past season, Wilson had a passer rating of 72.8 with 1,688 yards, 6 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions in 9 games. Many believe that the New York Jets would have made the playoffs if they had a decent quarterback and most of the blame was placed on Zach Wilson, as Mike White was able to gain the trust of his teammates.
If Wilson doesn't improve in the future, he could be termed one of the biggest busts in the history of the game. He was picked ahead of the likes of Trey Lance, Justin Fields, and Mac Jones. So far, he hasn't shown anything that makes him look better than the quarterbacks who were picked after him.
Zach Wilson is unlikely to start for the Jets next season
The New York Jets have openly expressed their interest in getting a veteran quarterback on board for next season. They want to make a push for the Super Bowl and think it's necessary.
The Jets are considering Aaron Rodgers, Derek Carr, and Jimmy Garoppolo to be their quarterback next season. Those quarterbacks could really take their talented roster to new heights.
That will mean that Zach Wilson won't be starting for the Jets next season. The franchise is hoping that under a veteran quarterback, Wilson can learn and become the player that he was expected to become when they drafted him in 2021.
Aaron Rodgers is Wilson's idol. If the Jets are able to land the Packers quarterback, it would be the best possible outcome for both the franchise and Wilson.
