Dolphins HC Mike McDaniel drops bold response to Odell Beckham Jr's departure
Amid a complex 2024 NFL season, Miami Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel and his team parted ways with veteran receiver Odell Beckham Jr. After only nine games with the Floridian franchise, Beckham finished his tenure at Hard Rock Stadium ahead of the final four games of the season with the Dolphins still trying to sneak into the AFC playoffs.
When asked if he had any regrets about bringing Beckham Jr to the team, McDaniel had a blunt response, implying that he was tired of the questions regarding a player who isn't on the team anymore.
"No, no regrets," McDaniel said per Sports Illustrated. "My only regrets are that we're not talking more about the Texans. "
The coach explained the process of parting with Odell Beckham Jr</a>., revealing that he had been in touch with the wide receiver since he arrived in Miami to determine what was best for his season.
"Conversations led us to determining that it was the best for both parties. Odell and I have been very communicative since he's been here," McDaniel said.
"He had a tough start in terms of having to rehab his way into the season, and then just looking at it as simple as, all right, what's the best for both him and the team moving forward and we just thought it was a good time to go that direction. That was the motivation behind it, that's all," he added.
Although he was a solid contributor for the Baltimore Ravens last season, OBJ couldn't make a similarly strong impact on the Dolphins. The wide receiver has had a career full of ups and downs, dominating in the New York Giants, becoming one of the best in his position and then winning a Super Bowl with the LA Rams after a tumultuous tenure with the Cleveland Browns.
Revisiting Odell Beckham Jr's tenure with the Dolphins
If Odell Beckham Jr. doesn't sign with a different team in the next four weeks, this season will be the first time he scores zero touchdowns in his career. The veteran wide receiver was targeted 18 times in nine games, catching nine passes for 55 receiving yards.
Beckham Jr. was expected to complement Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle but couldn't impact the team. OBJ isn't the player he used to be, but he showed in Baltimore that he can be helpful. This season, however, he didn't land in the best situation.
