Drake Maye makes feelings clear on Josh Allen comparisons amid Patriots QB's impressive rookie season

Drake Maye has been touted as the New England Patriots' quarterback of the future. Despite his 2-7 record as a starter, he has completed 68.5% of his passing attempts for 1,898 yards and 12 touchdowns against nine interceptions as well as rushed 42 times for 359 yards and two touchdowns.

That has led to comparisons to Josh Allen, the current face of the Buffalo Bills (6-foot-4, 225 pounds vs 6-5, 237), who said before their game against each other:

“I think their quarterback is going to be really good for a really long time. He’s making some unbelievable plays, extending and from the pocket. I’ve got a lot of respect for him and his game.”

Speaking to the press, Maye downplayed the comparisons:

“I think I’ve got a long way to go to get anywhere close to playing like that.”

Drake Maye defends Jerod Mayo amid speculation of Patriots HC's job security

The beginning of the Drake Maye era in Foxboro coincided with the beginning of the post-Bill Belichick era, as the Patriots, coming off a 4-13 record in 2023 (the worst of the multiple-time Super Bowl champion's tenure), hired a new head coach in Jerod Mayo.

But there has been speculation that the former linebacker may be out as soon as the 2025 season ends. Maye, however, wants the front office under executive vice president of player personnel/unofficial general manager Eliot Wolf, to stick with Mayo.

“His first year being a head coach, it’s a tough challenge. … It’s a lot of responsibility," Maye said. "He’s figuring it out, and I think our players, we’re behind him. We’re backing him.
“We trust the plan he’s got for us. ... We believe in it, and we’re bought into it. I just think the results are coming. I think everybody wishes they were now, and I think we’re kind of striving for that. But sometimes, it doesn’t work out that way. But I think we’re overcoming, and the winning is coming in the near future.”

Kickoff for the Patriots-Bills game is at 4:25 p.m. ET on CBS.
