Drake Maye makes feelings known on ex-HC Bill Belichick potentially coaching UNC
Although it is not yet official, Bill Belichick is almost certain to become the head coach at the University of North Carolina. Many were surprised to learn that even if the eight-time Super Bowl winner returned to coaching, he would not do it with an NFL franchise.
The Jacksonville Jaguars, the New York Jets and the New Orleans Saints were touted as possible landing spots, but according to Belichick, none of the teams reached out whereas UNC did.
In a press conference on Wednesday, New England Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye made his feelings clear about the team's former coach possibly moving to a college team.
"Legendary coach, with the success he had here. And what a great place Chapel Hill is. Any time you have a legendary NFL coach going back to college, it's pretty cool. I think coach Belichick would love Chapel Hill," Drake Maye told reporters.
While Drake Maye seems to support the idea of Belichick coaching a college football team, a former Pats player is not completely on board with the idea.
Rob Gronkowski thinks Bill Belichick will not make a great college coach
During Tuesday's episode of the "Dan Patrick Show", former Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski said he doesn't see his former coach well-suited for a college coaching job.
“I can't see Coach Belichick, you know, being all in that situation,” Gronkowski said. “Coaching wise, 100%. On the field, getting these players ready for the NFL, that's what he would do."
He said that while Belichick could ace the actual coaching aspect of the job, a college HC's duties extended beyond that and he would have to involve himself in transfer portals and NILs.
"But hey, when it comes to recruiting, I think that's the question mark, and that's really up to him, if he can see himself doing that, which me, personally, I can see him getting tired and old with all that transfer portal and NIL stuff going on."
But Gronk's concerns may be unfounded since Bill Belichick was not just the HC of the Patriots, but their General Manager as well, and so was responsible for signing new players and managing trade deals as well.
Could Bill Belichick prove Gronk wrong should UNC agree to the demands set by him before taking up the job?
