Eagles icon Nick Foles drops Jason Kelce's playbook tips for Justin Fields

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields is fighting for a starting quarterback position, and former NFL quarterback Nick Foles gave him some advice.

As Fields is battling veteran Russell Wilson for the Steelers' starting QB position, Foles gave Fields advice on remaining calm under center and having good communication with the center.

Foles joined former Eagles teammate and defensive end Chris Long on his podcast "Green Light with Chris Long," and he gave Fields some tips:

"I think with Justin Fields, the key to success is how do you allow his mind to be calm while he plays? Like, if you're a coach who is, you’re going to make every mike point, every protection call, and then you’re going to read the coverage, then you’re going to audible and do that. I wouldn’t like that, I didn’t like that. When I was in Philadelphia, Kelce made all the calls for all his quarterbacks, and then I would give him time to adjust calls."
"Very seldom did I ever change what he did, maybe once or twice. You want your mind simple so you could play fast, the NFL is too fast to play slow. So I think with any quarterback, we’re talking about Justin Fields. Recognize who he is, recognize how to make him better, if you do that, you’re going to see a lot of success." Timestamp: (1:14:00)

The Steelers might not have a center at the caliber of Kelce, but from what Foles said, Fields should find ways to remain calm before plays and rely on his center for audibles.

With the 2024 NFL season set to take place in less than two weeks, the Pittsburgh Steelers are one of two teams (along with the New England Patriots) to name their starting quarterback for Week 1.

Since the offseason, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said that Wilson was "the pole position" to win the job. Wilson began the preseason inactive due to a calf strain, but he played in their second preseason game against the Bills.

Neither Wilson (8-of-10 for 47 yards) nor Fields (11-of-17 for 92 yards) did anything to seperate themselves for the lead as the team's starting quarterback.

The Steelers face the Detroit Lions tomorrow (Aug. 24) in their preseason finale. Tomorrow's game is crucial for Wilson and Fields, who each have a shot to take the lead for the starting position. Who do you think it will be?
