Eagles Nation look away, over 50% NFL fans confident Mahomes will be named Super Bowl MVP

It's nearly time for Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs to take on the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl. Jalen Hurts will look to cement his place in history after a virtuoso season in which he missed out on the league MVP award to Patrick Mahomes.

The bad news for Eagles fans is that NFL fans do not believe it will come to pass. With nearly 9000 votes cast in a poll conducted by Sportskeeda, 51 percent chose the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback to take home the Super Bowl MVP award as well. Hurts followed at 34 percent, with Travis Kelce and A.J. Brown at 10 and 5 percent, respectively.

Given that it's generally a player on the winning team who wins the award, that would point to Kansas City beating Philadelphia to win the Lombardi Trophy as well.

If that were to come true, it would mean that Patrick Mahomes would become the first league MVP to win the Super Bowl since Kurt Warner did so in 1999. He will also become the first quarterback to lift the ultimate prize in the NFL, having led the league in passing yards in the regular season.

Most importantly, it would put him among multiple Super Bowl winners and cement his budding greatness.

Has any losing team player won Super Bowl MVP, and can Eagles hope for same fate to befall Mahomes?

Despite the results, Eagles fans should not completely give up hope. It says that history often repeats itself, and that maybe Philadelphia will win despite a great performance by Patrick Mahomes.

It's not beyond the realms of possibility that it could happen again, as it has occurred before, albeit a long time ago. In Super Bowl V, the Baltimore Colts beat the Dallas Cowboys 16-13, but the Super Bowl MVP award went to linebacker Chuck Howley.

It remains the only instance of a player from the losing team winning the Super Bowl MVP award. In the process, Howley also became the first player who was not a quarterback to win the prestigious honor. Thankfully for him, he and the Cowboys would go on to win Super Bowl VI the next season. He was inducted this year into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Now known as Hall of Famer No. 365, Chuck Howley's Hall of Fame resume includes:

-MVP of Super Bowl V
-Super Bowl Champion (VI)
-@dallascowboys Ring of Honor https://t.co/GyWlAOyXn0

While the Eagles nation cannot depend on the same thing happening with Patrick Mahomes, stranger events have taken place in the NFL. Hope should always spring eternal.
