Ex-Cowboys QB lands job with Saints after major Derek Carr injury update

The New Orleans Saints received some distressing news in Week 14. They ran away with a 14-11 win against the hapless New York Giants but that win came at a cost after starting quarterback Derek Carr suffered a major injury.

Carr fractured his non-throwing hand and is expected to be out for the next three to four weeks. In an effort to shore up their ranks, the Saints have turned to former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Ben DiNucci.

The Cowboys initially drafted DiNucci in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He then bounced around with the Denver Broncos and was signed to the Buffalo Bills practice squad, though they did not sign him to the active roster.

"I have fun news. I signed with the Saints this morning. Source - myself (fairly credible)," DiNucci wrote on social media platform X.

What Saints depth chart looks like after Derek Carr's injury

Jake Haener filled in for Derek Carr the last time he missed three games with an oblique injury earlier this season. The Saints have made no indication that they will turn to rookie Spencer Rattler, with Carr set to miss another three weeks at a minimum.

Ben DiNucci's signing gives the Saints some relief towards the business end of the season as the injuries start piling up across the board.

Saints facing big decisions in 2025

The Saints are currently one of three teams without a head coach in a list that includes the New York Jets and Chicago Bears. With Bill Belichick likely to take up a role in college football by signing with the University of North Carolina, the Saints will now have to turn their attentions to some other names who will be on the coaching carousel in 2025.

Those names include Detroit Lions OC Ben Johnson, who has been strongly linked with the Chicago Bears, and his colleague Lions DC Aaron Glenn. The likes of Brian Flores, Kliff Kingsbury and Joe Brady are also expected to get interviews this summer.

Elsewhere, the Saints are currently projected to have a top-10 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Resident draft expert Tony Pauline sees the Saints going for Missouri's Luther Burden III in his latest mock draft.
