Ex-Legion of Boom member dissects Russell Wilson's career revival with Mike Tomlin and Steelers
Russell Wilson is enjoying a career resurrection in Pittsburgh. The veteran quarterback signed a one-year contract with the Steelers after a turbulent stint with the Denver Broncos, and he has taken the team to a 9-3 record and a likely playoff appearance.
Wilson's level is not the same as his prime, as his old age has taken away his mobility, his greatest asset with the Seattle Seahawks. However, he has taken good care of the ball, with five wins and only three interceptions in six games.
This improvement, when compared to the Broncos days, has been noted by some of his past teammates. Former NFL cornerback Richard Sherman, a Seahawks superstar of his own, has mentioned on a recent podcast appearance why is Wilson playing well again:
He's got a coach that believes in him, and he has a very solid system around him. He's showing some humility. You don't hear the interviews and things that you know, the catchphrases and things like that that he showed in Denver, where it just seemed like he was trying to separate himself from the Seattle Seahawks and really identify himself as an individual that plays at a high level, that needs to be recognized week in and week out. I think Mike Tomlin has done a great job of managing the expectations from him and with him, having really honest conversations with him. He's just played good football. I mean, you got to give him credit.
Russell Wilson's stats in the 2024 season
The veteran quarterback recently turned 36, but he's still playing well. After missing the first weeks of the season due to a calf injury, he returned to play and has taken over from Justin Fields. With a 5-1 record, he has also won two out of three division games.
In those six starts, Wilson amassed ten touchdowns, three interceptions, 1,626 passing yards, and a 65.8% completion rate, much better numbers than what he did in Denver. Although he has no contract for 2025, it's unlikely that the Steelers will allow him to return to free agency instead of an extension.
