Ex-NFL MVP Cam Newton serves training camp PSA to rookies' wives and girlfriends
As Cam Newton likely knows, it isn't rare to see a former player or analyst call on players to focus in August. However, it might be unprecedented to see a former player call out the spouses of rookie NFL players. Speaking on an August 12 edition of the 4th and 1 podcast, Newton laid down some fiery rhetoric.
“Baby, it ain’t about how shiny your damn car is or how shiny your shoes is. Is the person that you’re supporting doing his motherf**king job? You trying to shine like a king and a queen, y’all need to be staying under the radar, like princesses and princes.”
Newton's comments might not go over well, but as a camp casualty himself near the end of his career, the former Panthers quarterback's comments come from experience.
Newton reached a Super Bowl with the Carolina Panthers in 2015. However, by 2021, he was fighting for his career with his second NFL team.
The Patriots had drafted Mac Jones and appeared to be interested in giving Newton the reins to allow Jones to settle in as Tom Brady did.
However, Newton was cut late in training camp in one of the shocks of August 2021. As such, his message on his podcast appeared to be simply another way to call on both young players and their spouses to not take anything for granted. In other words, the work doesn't stop merely because they reached the NFL.
Cam Newton aiming to dethrone ESPN's Stephen A. Smith, Shannon Sharpe with unlikely team-up
Newton might have taken a risky swing with his comments directed towards the wives and girlfriends of the incoming rookie class. But that wasn't the only big swing in recent days.
Speaking on the 4th and 1 podcast, Newton asked Skip Bayless to join his podcast after Bayless announced that he would be leaving Undisputed.
"As they say, one man's trash is another man's treasure. I promise you, if you give me the opportunity, five shows, Skip, that's all I ask, five," he said.
Of course, that might just be the small commitment that leads to the big one. Shannon Sharpe and Stephen A. Smith started their partnership with just a few guest spots for Sharpe on First Take.
Now, it is not uncommon to see Sharpe work as a stand-in for Smith on the show occasionally, especially during the football season.
Will Cam Newton and Skip Bayless join forces?
