Ex-NFL QB Chase Daniel points out "big issue" with Patriots' plan for Drake Maye

New England Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye won't be the starter in Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals. While Maye is considered the quarterback of the future, the Patriots are turning to veteran Jacoby Brissett to start the season and allow their rookie to develop.

Former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel doesn't believe New England should wait too long before allowing Drake Maye to get time on the field. Daniel spoke to Dianna Russini on her "Scoop City" podcast and after reviewing the rookie's tape, he saw room for improvement that can only come from being on the field.

"For me, it comes down to film study. When you study the film, the word that really jumps out to me is raw. He needs some time to develop. I think if I was a media member today in New England, I'm asking Jerod Mayo ‘what's your plan for development in practice for Drake Maye?'
"That's a big issue because, I hate to say it, you cannot develop in practice. You have to play actual football games."

It remains to be seen if the New England Patriots will try and work Drake Maye into any plays or if he will simply watch from the sidelines for the time being.

Drake Maye wants to play; will be ready when time comes

New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo has made it clear in the last few weeks that Jacoby Brissett is QB1. There was some doubt surrounding that sentiment when Brissett suffered a shoulder injury in the final preseason game.

Brissett appears to be healthy and ready to start the season and Maye will be ready and willing when the time comes. He told reporters this week that he's not disappointed with the news of him being QB2 (via Boston.com)

“I wouldn’t say disappointed; obviously, I want to play. That’s the competitive edge in me. At the same time, I understand the situation. Jacoby has been in the offense and gotten the reps with ones all camp. So, I can’t say I’m disappointed, but at the same time, I want to be playing.”

The 22-year-old rookie quarterback continued by saying that no matter what, he will be ready for when his time does come to play.

“I’m still one play away, so just have to be ready for all circumstances and I’m here to help Jacoby and keep the vibes in the quarterback room up because nothing is going to change. I’m still rooting for him and cheering for him.”

The New England Patriots rookie understands where he falls on the depth chart and that his time will come. As to when that will be remains a pertinent question.
