Ex-NFL star Robert Griffin III calls for rule changes after refs miss 'obvious penalties' in Ravens vs Bengals game
The Thursday primetime matchup between the Cincinnati Bengals and Baltimore Ravens was a hard-fought AFC North battle. While the Ravens walked away with the division win, the end of the game has been a hot topic.
As Cincinnati attempted a two-point conversion at the end of the game, there were two obvious missed calls, one a roughing the passer call and another a holding call. On Friday, former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III shared his thoughts on the missed calls in a post on X.
Griffin III advocated for a rule change in the National Football League that would require replay review in the final two minutes of the game.
"The Cincinnati Bengals should have had another opportunity to convert on that extra point. Two clear penalties were missed and the hit to the face could have easily been called a foul if replay review was a rule. CHANGE THE RULE FOR CLEAR AND OBVIOUS MISSED PENALTIES IN THE LAST 2 MINS OF THE GAME so we can have games end without these obvious missed calls."-Griffin wrote on X
The missed two-point conversion obviously decided the outcome of the game with the Baltimore Ravens defeating the Cincinnati Bengals 35-34 win.
Al Michaels voiced his frustration amid Bengals loss to Ravens
Unfortunately for NFL fans, missed calls have become the deciding factor in games this season. It has not only become frustrating for NFL fans but, apparently, for announcers as well.
Longtime NFL announcer Al Michaels, who calls the Thursday night games for Amazon Prime, voiced his frustrations during the broadcast. Michaels said that the missed calls have become too frequent and that it has become frustrating for everyone.
"Too many games end this way. They just do. You miss calls. The whole thing. So frustrating for the fans. So frustrating."-Al Michaels said during the broadcast
The one missed call that has come into question is a holding call against the Baltimore Ravens where Bengals tight end Mike Gesicki was essentially thrown to the ground. The other is a missed roughing the passer call when Cincinnati quarterback Joe Burrow was hit in the face while attempting the missed throw.
Some may argue that Cincinnati could have kicked the extra-point to tie the game but, in a hard-fought division battle, taking risks is warranted.
