EXCLUSIVE: “He’s not happy now” – Ex-Falcons HC believes Ravens are fumbling Lamar Jackson’s extension talks
Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens' contract talks have been locked in a standoff for a very long time. The Ravens quarterback has gone two straight seasons without a playoff appearance, but for many, the team's hopes for the future ride with the quarterback.
That is also the opinion one former NFL head coach revealed while speaking with Sportskeeda.
Speaking on the "Ballfather Podcast," former Atlanta Falcons HC Mike Smith explained Jackson's mindset and how crucial he is to the Ravens' future:
"I don't know what's going to happen next with Baltimore and their quarterback situation because right now Lamar is not happy. And they know they can't win with the guys that they got.
"But they've got a great group of guys around a great quarterback. So their team, if they can get this thing worked out with Lamar Jackson, they're going to be good."
Without Jackson, the Baltimore Ravens have gone 0-6 and 2-4 over the last two seasons. In 2021, they started 8-3 and missed the playoffs at 8-9. In the 2022 campaign, they started 8-4 and limped into the playoffs with a 10-7 record before coming up short against the Cincinnati Bengals.
What is Lamar Jackson earning with the Ravens?
From 2018-2021, Jackson earned between $1 million and just over $3 million each season. In 2022, the he brought in $23 million with his fifth-year option. Heading into 2023, Jackson is set to hit free agency unless the Ravens hit him with the franchise tag.
So, will Lamar Jackson get franchise tagged?
Fans and pundits would be shocked if Jackson isn't hit with the tag this spring. The earliest they will be able to do so will be on February 21, 2023. They have until March 7, 2023 to designate the quarterback.
It will be interesting to see if they can reach an agreement before then.
