Former Broncos TE details why Bo Nix will beat out Zach Wilson for starting QB job

Bo Nix and Zach Wilson are on a collision course to secure the No. 1 QB spot for the Denver Broncos. However, former Broncos TE Julius Thomas shared his insights as to why one 24-year-old QB is better placed to take the job over the other 24-year-old QB.

Nix was drafted 12th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft by the Broncos, while Wilson was the second overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft by the New York Jets. After an unimpressive stint in New York, Wilson has joined the Broncos roster for a fresh start. However, two-time Pro Bowler Thomas predicts Wilson will be on the bench once again in favor of the rookie Nix.

Thomas appeared on the ‘Up & Adams’ show and didn’t shy away from predicting the future of the young Broncos QBs. He easily answered host Kay Adams' question of which QB would be the starter.

“I think it just gotta be Bo Nix. I do think so.”

Thomas then expanded on his reasoning from the viewpoint of a receiver. He added:

“If you ask a pass catcher, what's the most important thing it's accuracy? And if you've got one of the most accurate quarterbacks sitting in that backfield, you're gonna want that guy to be throwing the ball.”
“I mean, I got a chance to watch him (Bo Nix) play a couple of times in Oregon this year. And I mean, he was on the money with that ball placement. And that's huge in the NFL.”

While Bo Nix and Zach Wilson are currently trying to solidify their positions throughout the OTAs and mandatory minicamps, Thomas’ prediction could dampen the mood for Wilson going forward.

Bo Nix is built like Drew Brees

On the ‘Up & Adams’ show, Julius Thomas likened the abilities and physical stature of Nix to that of Drew Brees.

“He doesn't seem that different in size and stature from a really good quarterback that Sean Payton has had before,” Thomas said.

Brees and Sean Payton successfully collaborated with each other at the New Orleans Saints for 15 seasons, even winning the 2009 Super Bowl. Only time will tell whether Nix will be able to replicate similar success under Payton or not.
