Former Commanders HC Ron Rivera cautions Brian Callahan against taking hostile tone on Will Levis
Brian Callahan caused a stir with his Will Levis comments over the last few days. Seemingly every analyst and reporter has their thoughts on the situation, including Super Bowl 50 head coach Ron Rivera. Speaking on Tuesday's edition of "Good Morning Football," Rivera claimed that the rhetoric is a teaching point for the young Titans head coach.
Rivera said (1:00):
"His father's on the staff. He's running the offensive line. He probably had a great conversation with Brian, and Brian's going to learn and grow from this. But again, you also have to remember you are going to get emotional. You got to be careful, especially with the cameras on you, because you never know. Mom might hear you."
Brian Callahan was caught on video apparently dropping an f-bomb in frustration over Will Levis' late-game interception in a showdown against Aaron Rodgers' New York Jets. Levis only had one interception on the day, but it cost the Titans dearly in a 24-17 loss.
Brian Callahan clarifies viral on-field outburst directed at Will Levis in loss against Jets
The Titans head coach easily could have brushed the incident under the rug, but he didn't. When asked by reporters about the outburst after the game, Callahan kept the tone somewhat harsh but explained why he lost his patience, per NFL media:
"Yeah, I was upset. It was dumb. It was the same exact thing he did last week, and it cost us points in the red zone. That is what it is. He's a grown-up, and he knows better. I was really irritated that he cost us three points in a game that we probably needed it."
With Mike Vrabel gone and the addition of Calvin Ridley and Tony Pollard taking root, it is a new day for the Titans. These two weeks have set the tone but based on Callahan's interpretation of events, it isn't going according to plan.
Levis has thrown three interceptions in two games and has more turnovers than touchdowns. The Titans are 0-2, but there is some reason for hope. The only team in the division that has won a game so far this season is the Houston Texans, who are 2-0. It would take just one win for the Titans to potentially jump all the way into second place in the division, setting up a one-on-one race with the Texans.
