Former Commanders QB tries out for Packers as Jordan Love contract gets concerning update

Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love is not participating in training camp practices until he signs a contract extension. Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst confirmed the news to the media on Monday morning.

Gutekunst at one point said that he felt the two sides were close to a deal and that it could take longer than expected, as it is a big contract. The Packers aren't taking any chances at being short-handed if Jordan Love's contract negotiations take longer than expected.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported on Monday morning that quarterback Jake Fromm had a tryout with Green Bay that morning.

"Free agent QB Jake Fromm worked out for the #Packers today, source said. The former #Commanders, #Giants and #Bills backup would be a potential pre-camp addition."

Heading into training camp this week, former Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford and rookie quarterback Michael Pratt out of Tulane were the only other quarterbacks on the Packers roster.

Fromm was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL draft. He spent two seasons with the Bills, which included time on the practice squad. He was then signed by the New York Giants in 2021 and then spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons with the Washington Commanders.

What is the status of Jordan Love's contract extension negotiations?

Quarterback Jordan Love may have only one year as a starter on his résumé, but he has spent four total seasons with the Green Bay Packers. That puts him in the position for a contract extension, and with the success he found last season as a first-year starter, he is likely expecting a big payday.

Jordan Love reported to training camp with the Green Bay Packers, but general manager Brian Gutekunst said on Monday morning that the quarterback's agent informed him that he won't be taking the practice field. The 25-year-old will participate in meetings but won't practice until the extension is signed.

Gutekunst said that he thought both sides were close to agreeing on a deal. However, he added that it could take days or even longer.

"Yeah, I think so, but again you never know. We're working really hard to get that done. I think it's really important for us. At the same time, the thing that I have confidence in is that we both want the same thing. We want Jordan here for a long time, give him that stability for him, and it gives us some stability for our group as well.
"I'm optimistic. These are big deals. It takes time. They're not as easy as some people may think. I feel we're close, but no real timetables as far as how long it's going to take."

The Green Bay Packers quarterback was seen on the practice field as a spectator on Monday afternoon, watching his offense.
