Former Jets HC slams Will Levis’ play as “selfish” attempt to duplicate Brett Favre in loss against Aaron Rodgers
Will Levis and Aaron Rodgers might not duel again, considering Rodgers' age. As such, Sunday's game might have been Levis' only opportunity to defeat one of the most famous quarterbacks of the 21st century. However, the Levis fell short and one analyst isn't happy about it. Speaking on Monday's edition of "Get Up," NFL analyst Rex Ryan put Levis' play on blast (2:27):
"I mean, that's what it is. It is selfish. Like this guy plays like he's Brett Favre. You ain't Brett Favre."
The former Jets coach added:
"I gotta go home to Tennessee, Nashville to brag about my Titans. I'm not bragging. I'm sitting back going, 'What the hell are you doing?' Will Levis two weeks in a row, you cost us the football game."
Brett Favre was known as a gunslinger who would throw the football constantly for better or worse. Ryan appears to believe that Levis was trying to do too much in trying to be the hero, hence the criticism.
The Titans slipped to 0-2 on Sunday, losing 24-17 to the New York Jets. Aaron Rodgers threw for 176 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions in his first win since leaving Green Bay. Levis, meanwhile threw for 192 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
The Titans led the game at the half by a score of 10-7. However, they let their slim lead evaporate in the third quarter and lost the game in the fourth quarter.
Brian Callahan gives scathing review of Will Levis' costly interception
Rex Ryan wasn't happy, but Brian Callahan was furious. The Tennessee Titans coach was seen fuming during the game, even seemingly dropping an F-bomb directed at Levis.
His frustration didn't appear to end there. Speaking in a post-game press conference after the game, per NFL media, Callahan didn't mince words.
"Yeah, I was upset. It was dumb. It was the same exact thing he did last week, and it cost us points in the red zone. That is what it is. He's a grown-up, and he knows better. I was really irritated that he cost us three points in a game that we probably needed it."
Levis now has two touchdowns and three interceptions on the year, which creates a ratio on pace to end the year worse than his rookie season. Last year, Levis threw for eight touchdowns and four interceptions, creating a 2:1 ratio. Now, he has less than a 1:1 ratio.
The season is young, but the state of his play can only apply pressure on Will Levis going forward. Will this be the last scathing review from Brian Callahan this season?
