Former Legion of Boom member urges Aaron Rodgers to quit as Jets' season spirals into chaos
The New York Jets will forever be in the headlines, that's just the nature of things when you play in New York. The media gives no quarter, and if there's the slightest hint of dysfunction, the headlines will be there for all to see. After decades of playing in Wisconsin, Aaron Rodgers is learning what it's like to be the subject of headlines 24/7.
After a Week 13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, where the game was theirs for the taking, the headlines showed Rodgers no mercy as the Jets racked up their ninth loss of the season. That loss also means that the Jets now have the longest active NFL streak of losing seasons at nine in all.
Given the noise surrounding his future, a number of NFL athletes have given their two cents about what course of action Rodgers should take. Former Seattle Seahawks DB had a lot to say about the four-time NFL MVP. On the Richard Sherman Podcast, the former Legion of Boom member said:
"I wouldn’t be shocked if this was Aaron’s last season. When you aren’t able to play at the level you want to play at, sometimes you don’t feel like playing."
"It’ll take time to really collect his thoughts and figure out what direction he wants to go. But I wouldn’t come back because you just don’t want to keep putting bad things on tape. Not that it’s going to affect his legacy. I hate when people say that."
Sherman added that the comparisons to Tom Brady are unwarranted despite the fact that both quarterbacks switched teams late into their careers.
"There are people comparing him to Tom Brady. You won’t really be able to compare because of just simple straight up math. A guy leaves his team, goes to another team. One has success and wins the Super Bowl at 45 and the other doesn’t," Sherman said.
"He’s a first ballot Hall of Famer, there’s no question about that. One of the greatest quarterbacks to play in the National Football League."
New York Jets face dearth of options if Aaron Rodgers leaves
Interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich confirmed that Aaron Rodgers would continue to be their quarterback as they look forward to Week 14. This is despite Rodgers being 0-5 with a chance to win the game on the final drive.
However, Rodgers himself has said he isn't certain of playing with the Jets next year. After the Week 13 loss to Seattle, Rodgers told reporters:
"There's uncertainty with everybody on the staff, so I'm not naive to what the situation is. If a new GM comes in and they don't retain Brick [Jeff Ulbrich], I have to fit in those plans."
"This is my first option. I'd love to play here if I end up deciding to play, but there's got to be the want for them to want to bring me back and for me to want to play. But 'I think so' was the truth and 'I'm not 100% sure' is also the truth today."
