Former NFL MVP QB Cam Newton signs with ESPN to join Stephen A. Smith for ‘First Take’ show

The former NFL quarterback Cam Newton has joined ESPN's First Take to serve as a commentator for the show. Newton will make his debut on Oct. 11 during a live taping at Tennessee State University as part of the program's HBCU roadshow.

Newton will join hosts Stephen A. Smith and Molly Qerim as well as daily guests such as Shannon Sharpe and Chris "Mad Dog" Russo.

Upon joining ESPN as part of First Take, Newton said that he's looking forward to the opportunity and plans on bringing over his intense attitude.

Newton said:

"I’ve always brought passion and energy into everything I do, and that won’t change at ESPN. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to share my perspective and go toe-to-toe with the best in the business. Fans can expect the same intensity I brought to the field, along with real talk, bold takes, and good fun.”

Newton becomes the most recent former sports icon that the company has hired. They also hired former Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce and former Alabama football coach Nick Saban.

Newton has been active in the media. After his playing career, he started his own weekly podcast/YouTube channel, "4th&1 with Cam Newton," which is a hit on YouTube.

David Roberts, the executive vice president and executive sports editor of news and entertainment at ESPN, spoke about Newton's addition. Roberts said:

“Cam Newton’s addition to ‘First Take’ brings an electrifying presence, enhancing our roster of top-tier personalities. His dynamic charisma, combined with the high-profile debates alongside Stephen A. Smith, will create compelling, must-watch television for fans.”

It's safe to say Cam Newton's successful playing career helped land him a job with ESPN.

Newton flourished in college at Auburn, winning the 2010 Heisman Trophy and becoming the 2011 first-overall pick in the NFL Draft. He also went on to win Offensive Rookie of the Year.

In his 11-year NFL career, Newton made three Pro Bowls, one All-Pro, and was league MVP in 2015. He led the Panthers to the Super Bowl in 2015 and holds a 3-4 postseason record.

Newton is one of many former NFL players to successfully find a job in the sports media world after their playing career.
