Former NFL QB claims Bill Belichick is ruining Mac Jones: “You don’t want to waste that kind of talent”

Patriots head coach and general manager Bill Belichick has been lauded for fostering a culture of growth for his quarterbacks. This season, however, the tone has started to shift. Speaking on the Herd with Colin Cowherd, former NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez expressed fear that the head coach is holding back quarterback Mac Jones. Here's how he put it:

"You take away those players and Mac Jones has really got to get creative back there. I think to his credit, though, he's really owned it even before the game. Did you see him like bumping into Patricia in warm ups? He's understanding what's at stake here and he's trying to take it and go."
"I have flipped. I think he's a franchise quarterback."

He continued, explaining that the quarterback hasn't had the pieces put around him like other young quarterbacks like division rival Josh Allen:

"It's unfortunate because you don't want to waste that kind of talent if you can't help him. You got to put players around him to make him successful and give him the best possible scenario to succeed. Like Josh Allen, like a lot of these other quarterbacks that get that type of talent and help."

How are Patriots HC Bill Belichick and Mac Jones faring in 2022?

Unlike previous years, the New England Patriots have largely run under the radar. As it stands, they've clawed their way into the seventh seed in the AFC. However, they trail the rest of their division at 7-6. Of course, it has proven to be one of the toughest divisions in football, but the Patriots sitting in last place has put more than a few fans on edge.

Belichick's team hit their stride in Week 5 after starting 1-3. From Week 5 until Week 11, they went 5-1. However, over the last three weeks, they've gone 1-2, leaving plenty to wonder if the team has hit another bump in the road. Mac Jones and Bill Belichick will thus hope to prove critics wrong when they face former offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 15.

I actually love Mac Jones coming alive. Good for him. https://t.co/b37dWvmiwq
