Former Patriots CB reveals Bill Belichick’s support for Donald Trump ‘shook the locker room’

Bill Belichick and Donald Trump have had a relationship going back years. As the real estate mogul was mounting up for his presidential bid in 2016 against Hillary Clinton, Belichick endorsed him. As per former New England Patriots cornerback Logan Ryan, this endorsement brought turmoil to the locker room.

Ryan was drafted by Belichick in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft. The CB played for the Patriots till the 2016 season and won two Super Bowls. However, it was the year 2016 when Trump and Clinton faced off when the cracks began to appear in the Patriots' locker room as per the 33-year-old.

On Thursday, Logan Ryan appeared on Fox Sports ‘The Herd’ and the former Patriots man recounted the effect of Belichick breaking his own rule as he sided with Donald Trump publicly in the dressing room. He said to the host Colin Cowherd:

“I see the kind of the turn, of the political statements coming out from Bill supporting Trump and whatnot. We said, We're not going to talk about anybody's own personal beliefs."
“So, I saw how that kind of shook the locker room like, ‘Hey we don't talk about those things why are you talking about those things." [17:45 – 18:04]

However, Bill Belichick still went on to have tremendous success after endorsing Trump, as he took the Patriots to three Super Bowls in the next three years and won two of them.

The rocky relationship of Donald Trump and Bill Belichick

The former Patriots boss and the former President have known each other for years; however, this relationship became public in 2016 when Belichick wrote a letter endorsing Trump’s leadership skills in 2016 as per NBC Boston.

The duo entered a rough patch when Bill Belichick refused the honor of being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2020. As per reports, Belichick refused the honor due to Trump’s actions that led to the January 6 procession at Capitol Hill.

Since then, they both have maintained radio silence, however, Trump did express sadness over the Patriots’ form during the last season of Belichick at the job.
