Former Super Bowl Champion breaks down Andy Reid's masterplan for Travis Kelce
It's been a rough start to the 2024 NFL season for Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. He is widely considered one of the best TEs in the league, but Kelce seems to be fading in his 14th NFL season.
Through the Chiefs' first two games of the 2024 season, Kelce only has four receptions on seven targets for 39 receiving yards. Kelce had one catch for five yards in the season opener against the Baltimore Ravens and had three catches for 34 yards in the Chiefs' second game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Speaking on Wednesday's edition of "The Facility" on FS1, former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel isn't concerned about Kelce's early season lack of production. He said that the Chiefs could be managing his workload to have him available towards the end of the season.
"I liken it to a load management for it's load management for here. And we've got a graphic to your point. The last six games of the regular season last year for Travis Kelce, he didn't even average five catches a game, 57 receiving yards per game, zero tink tinks."
"All right, look at the playoffs shady to your point, eight catches a game, 90 yards receiving and three touchdowns. All right. So they're saving them for this," Daniel said.
Travis Kelce by the numbers: Kelce's numbers shows he's one of the best TE's ever
Despite Travis Kelce having a slow start in 2024, he's still one of the best tight ends of all time with the production he's put together in his 13 seasons prior.
For his career, Kelce has caught 911 receptions, 11,367 yards and 74 receiving touchdowns. He has recorded seven straight 1,000-yard seasons from 2016-2022.
He has the second most receiving touchdowns in Chiefs franchise history with only Tony Gonzalez (76) ahead of him. Kelce has the most receiving yards in franchise history and is fourth all-time in the NFL among TEs.
While Kelce's production slowed down towards the second half of the 2023 NFL season, he still showed up big and was reliable in the postseason. He had 32 receptions for 355 yards and three touchdowns.
The Kansas City Chiefs signed Kelce to a two-year $34.25 million contract extension this offseason and showed that they're still committed and believe in him. Kelce and the Chiefs will face the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday at 8:20 p.m. ET.
