Giants' Daniel Jones became centerpiece of Brian Daboll's training camp: Report

The New York Giants opted not to pursue another quarterback option over the offseason, instead trusting Brian Daboll and Daniel Jones to run it back for 2024. That required some work over the time off, and Daboll reportedly altered his offense to make Jones the focal point. With Saquon Barkley gone, the Giants needed to reset.

All told, the team ran about 500 more reps than they did the year before. The offense worked on 140 more plays. Daboll said via the New York Post that it was all for the QB:

“Really specifically designed for DJ to give him more team reps and less 7-on-7, to handle pressures and rush lanes, stepping up in the pocket. Thought that was important.’’

The Giants picked sixth overall this year, which meant they could have taken Bo Nix, the Denver Broncos' new starter, or Michael Penix Jr. There were also rumors of them trading up for Drake Maye, though that didn't happen.

They decided to go with the highly-paid Jones instead, and Daboll made it his personal mission over the offseason to put him in the best position to succeed in a key season for the player.

When does Daniel Jones enter free agency?

Daniel Jones' $40 million-a-year contract was a big deal when it was signed. Now, that number pales in comparison to QB contracts. Still, Jones was paid a lot and he hasn't quite lived up to it. Rumors have swirled that the New York Giants will move on soon.

They opted not to do that this offseason, but at some point, they might. The contract is standing in the way presently, but it won't last forever. There are still two more seasons left on the deal, though.

However, after this season, it gets a lot easier to cut Jones and move on. There will be a dead cap hit and it will impact the Giants in the short term, but it is easier to move on in the future than it would have been now. So for now, Brian Daboll is working to make Jones' life as easy as possible.
