Giants GM Joe Schoen's son urges him to draft Jayden Daniels in latest Hard Knocks episode - "You only get this job once"

Should Joe Schoen have replaced Daniel Jones?

During this year's Draft Combine, Rich Eisen claimed the New York Giants general manager had been having "buyer's remorse" over extending quarterback Daniel Jones for four years and $160 million, only to see him play poorly and tear his ACL.

And the latest episode of Hard Knocks has revealed that his own children had implored him to find a replacement as the Draft approached. Schoen's son Carson, who is currently a quarterback in high school, suggested trading up for Jayden Daniels, who would eventually join the Washington Commanders:

"You only get this job once. Might as well try to win."

But Daniels would not be available, so Carson listed Drake Maye and wideouts Marvin Harrison Jr. and Malik Nabers as fallback options.

Schoen's eldest daughter Sydney, meanwhile, suggested JJ McCarthy, who eventually went to the Minnesota Vikings via pick swap with the New York Jets. She said:

"I’m just looking at who looks like they would be a good quarterback."

Carson responded:

"All the girls want J.J. McCarthy because he’s good-looking. Look at him."

Ultimately, the Giants went with Nabers, giving Jones a legit WR1.

Joe Schoen discusses conversation about Daniel Jones' ACL recovery

Back in the present, Daniel Jones is still a Giant, and nearing a return after tearing his ACL. And his recovery process was one of the things Joe Schoen was asked about in his press conference on Wednesday morning.

He said that the two of them had conversed with senior player personnel executive Chris Mara, which was shown on Hard Knocks:

"I think we communicated with Daniel throughout the process, and we went through that process not knowing Daniel was going to be here today and go 100%. You are trying to make decisions, and you don't have all the answers. We didn't know that he was going to be healthy today, and we don't know what it's going to look like tomorrow."

Schoen also discussed Jones' motivation ahead of said return:

"I think of all the guys on the team, he probably does the best job tuning out the noise. I think he's wired for the position in terms of those strengths that I just said. He's been busting his tail and doing everything he can do to get back on the football field. He's a great teammate. He's a leader. And I'm excited to how things go this year if he can stay healthy."

The Giants' preseason begins against the Detroit Lions on August 8. Their regular season begins against the Minnesota Vikings on September 8.
