Giants owner John Mara once lashed out at Odell Beckham Jr. during team’s dismal season
The New York Giants drafted Odell Beckham Jr. with the 12th overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft. After five seasons in New York, OBJ was traded to the Cleveland Browns in 2019, but before that, the franchise owner had some words to say about the receiver
The Giants finished the 2018-2019 NFL season with the worst record (5-11) in the NFC East, and owner John Mara fired shots at Beckham Jr. for claiming that the team was mediocre.
Here's what Mara said five years ago:
“I think he needs to do a little more playing and a little less talking. It’s not just him, It’s pretty disappointing. I’m sick about it." Mara said, "When you’re 1-5, generally it means everybody has to play better.”
Things didn't end well for Odell Beckham Jr. in New York, but the door to a possible return has always been open. Last season, he was quite close to signing with the team. Unfortunately, he wasn't healthy enough.
John Mara recently stated that the New York Giants could still sign OBJ ahead of the new season. Beckham Jr. missed the entirety of last season while recovering from an ACL injury, and is now ready to play.
Odell Beckham Jr. is still a free agent
OBJ is once again among the most sought-after players available in the market. The former Los Angeles Rams receiver hasn't signed with a team yet, but there is a good amount of interest in him around the league.
Teams like the Buffalo Bills, New York Jets and the Kansas City Chiefs could make a play for Odell Beckham Jr., and he wouldn't hesitate in signing with them if the price is right.
There are concerns about his health following the ACL injury he sustained in the 2022 Super Bowl, which is why no deal has been reached yet. However, in the coming days, we expect him to finalize his decision.
In his last healthy season, OBJ had 44 catches for 537 yards and scored 5 touchdowns in 14 games. He played a big role in the Rams' Super Bowl run and would love to do the same for a different team this upcoming season.
