Giants WR Darius Slayton catches stray from fans over Eagles CB Darius Slay's controversial Brazil comments
New York Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton was under attack from Brazil fans over Darius Slay's comments. Slay and the Eagles are set to play the Green Bay Packers on Friday in Brazil in Week 1.
Ahead of the game, Slay criticized the NFL for scheduling this game in Brazil, as he wasn't happy with all the rules they had.
"I do not want to go to Brazil. You want to know why? I'm going to tell you why," Slay said. "They already told us not to leave the hotel. They told us we can't do too much going on, because the crime rate is crazy. I'm like 'NFL, why would you want to send us somewhere with a crime rate this high?'"
Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown also made a similar comment, saying he plans on just staying in his hotel room.
"We had a meeting [on Aug. 28], and there were a whole bunch of 'Don't Do's,'" Brown said, via CBS Sports. "So I'm just trying to go down there and win a football game, and come back home ... But after hearing all this stuff, I'm probably going to be in my room."
The Brazilian fans started to troll Darius Slayton of the New York Giants instead.
"Poor guy is catching strays," a fan added.
With that, the Giants receiver took to X to let Brazilian fans know he was not the one who commented.
"Dear people of Brazil my name is Darius SlayTON I play WR for the Giants i am innocent," Slayton wrote on X.
Slayton is entering his sixth NFL season and has spent his entire career with the Giants. He was selected in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL draft and last season, he recorded 50 receptions for 770 yards and four touchdowns.
Darius Slay apologizes for his comments
Following Darius Slay's comments that went viral, the Philadelphia Eagles cornerback walked it back. Slay took to social media to apologize to Brazilian fans for his comments.
"I want to apologize to anyone I offended, that wasn’t my intention. I’m looking forward to playing in your beautiful country and i’ve heard yall are very passionate just like our amazing Eagles fan. Just a few more days, can’t wait," Slay wrote on X.
Slay is entering his 12th NFL season and fifth with the Eagles. He began his career with the Detroit Lions.
