"Good night to Tom Brady" - Skip Bayless distraught after Bucs QB's shock retirement
Skip Bayless never misses an opportunity to tell "Undisputed" viewers about his love for quarterback Tom Brady. He has supported him whether he has played well or not.
On Wednesday morning, just minutes after the quarterback officially announced his retirement in a video posted to Twitter, Bayless was noticeably shocked and saddened.
The show opened with his co-host Shannon Sharpe asking Bayless if he was alright. Bayless wished Sharpe a "good morning" and then said "good night" to Tom Brady's football career. Bayless stated that Brady's retirement announcement was quite a bombshell. As he spoke, Bayless seemed to still be processing the news.
"Good morning to you, and good night to Tom Brady, the football player. Um, what a bombshell that just got dropped," Skip Bayless said.
Sharpe joked with his sidekick, asking if he needed a hug since he was upset.
"Do I need to come give you a hug?" Shannon Sharpe asked.
Before moving on, Bayless did say that this most-recent announcement from Brady actually felt like the real deal.
"It feels real this time," Skip Bayless said.
While many had expected the 45-year-old quarterback to eventually make this decision, the shock of the announcement wasn't easy for his his fans, especially Skip Bayless.
Tom Brady retires again exactly one year later
February 1 is apparently now known as Tom Brady Retirement Day. The seven-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback announced his first retirement on February 1, 2022, saying that it was time to walk away from the game that he loved so much. But 40 days later he took that declaration back and said that he would be returning to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the 2022 NFL season.
The season didn't go as planned. However, despite a losing record, the Bucs still won the NFC South. Their season ended with a loss in the Wild Card round to the Dallas Cowboys, which began the discussion of whether one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game had played his last.
On Wednesday, February 1, 2023, the quarterback posted a video to his social media accounts saying that he wanted his fans to know first that he was retiring, for good this time.
"Truly grateful on this day. Thank you"
He went on to say that there can only be one sentimental retirement message and he did that last year, so this time around, he made a video. He seemed to choke back tears as he thanked everyone for allowing him to live his dream. After 23 NFL seasons, the G.O.A.T. has officially called it a career and what a career it was.
