Hall of Fame WR gives Dak Prescott reality check as QB makes feelings clear over Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy
The Dallas Cowboys stand little to no chance of making the playoffs this year as the noise and uncertainty grows around the future of head coach Mike McCarthy.
The headlines will always hover around whoever is seated in that chair but given McCarthy's lack of success in the postseason despite having Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and a resolute defense, his job is more uncertain now than in previous seasons. However, this week, Prescott backed McCarthy to return for another year of football in Dallas.
"I believe in him wholeheartedly," he told Yahoo! Sports' Jori Epstein. "I don't want to necessarily get into the nuts and the screws of it all obviously, but I think he definitely deserves a chance. Another contract and a chance to coach this team amongst more influence. 'On his terms' may be a good way to say it."
Cowboys Hall of Famer Michael Irvin was clearly paying attention to Prescott's comments but didn't agree with them. In an appearance on FS1's Speak, Irvin had this to say to Prescott:
“It’s very admirable of Dak Prescott to come out and support his head coach and talk about how he wants him to come back. And I believe that. But ain’t nobody listening to that. Because the reality is he’s not the key for the Cowboys right now."
"We’re trying to put blame on everybody and say this is not on Mike McCarthy’s head."
Exploring Mike McCarthy's record as Dallas Cowboys head coach
As of the time of writing, over a four-year period as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, McCarthy boasts a 47-32 record in the regular season. However, it's his playoff record that has become a concern.
McCarthy is 1-3 in the playoffs, prompting more and more speculation about his future at The Star.
In any case, it appears McCarthy also paid attention to Prescott's very public comments. In an interview with reporters on Wednesday, McCarthy essentially disagreed with Prescott's take which insinuated that he hasn't had a lot of say over personnel decisions in Dallas.
McCarthy told reporters that he has had more input as head coach with the Cowboys than he had with the Packers, where he won a Super Bowl in 2011.
