"He's better than some starters in the league": JJ Watt takes issue with Joe Flacco not being Colts' QB1
Thanks to Joe Flacco, the Pittsburgh Steelers were handed their first defeat of the season by the Indianapolis Colts.
Anthony Richardson was ruled out of the game after he injured his hip on a hit by safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. Flacco walked into the field, and then immediately scored a touchdown for the Colts.
In the latest episode of "The Pat McAfee Show," former NFL star JJ Watt spoke about Flacco and was surprised at why he wasn't the starting QB for the Colts instead of Richardson.
"How come Flacco never gets the start from the gate?" Watt asked. "How come no team is doing that? It is interesting to me that he's always got to come off the bench and just go out there and crush it. I mean, he literally had to leave Cleveland, basically, because they didn't want a QB controversy there. So how come no team has taken this guy as their number one right now and just riding with him for a couple years and seeing what happens?"
The fact that Joe Flacco only got to play after Richardson was injured and not because he was benched for his six interceptions and four touchdowns in his previous three games is even more surprising.
While Watt agreed that the 39-year-old QB couldn't be the Colts' long-term answer for the QB position, he said that the Colts should try to win as many games as possible with him and that he was better than many other starting QBs in the league right now.
Joe Flacco reveals his mantra for winning games
After winning the game against the Steelers, Joe Flacco stepped on the podium to speak to reporters. Speaking about the game, and how he managed to help secure a win against the up-until-then undefeated Steelers, he said:
"You can't overthink it. It's football, and I think everybody's personality is a little bit different. Some guys love to think about every little thing and everything that can go right, everything that can go wrong, and that's how they play best. That's how they stay locked in. Don't overdo it. It's just a game of football. Go out there if the guy’s open, throw it to him and hit him."
The Colts will be up against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the upcoming week. While there has been no confirmation regarding Richardson's playing status, he said that he was optimistic of his return.
Colts fans are wondering when their team could decide to make the tough call and start Flacco instead of him.
